Activities & Events

The Birth Hub is a network of people who believe in promoting physiological birth and so as part of the bigger project to get a Birth Centre for Wellington, individuals within the group continue to follow their own passions too. This means that there are other projects, activities and events that happen which all feed in to the big project - all of this work grows the interest in the Birth Centre for Wellington project.

Come join us in celebrating our wonderful midwives :) at this family friendly event:
The Heart of Midwifery High Tea
Sunday 1st May 2016

RSVP to [email protected] by 25th April
Please complete our survey here to show what interest you have in this Birth Centre Project. We also want to get specific about areas of location for the physical building so there are some questions about that too..... Now that we have funders willing to work with the DHB to make our Birth Centre in Wellington a reality, we want to gather more specific info from stakeholders who are on the Birth Hub mailing list about your areas of interest and what you can support with e.g. if your area is research, how would you specifically see that fitting into the project, if you are wishing to promote physiological birth to midwifery students how could that work, if you are a midwife experienced in primary birth, an childbirth educator etc...It was mentioned at the Birth Centre meeting on Tuesday 23rd Feb 2016 about a possible Advisory Board - with academics, clinicians, consumers etc... could you see that as something you would put yourself forward for.....?
There are just a handful of questions to answer so it should take a short amount of your time.

We have just heard (23rd October) that last week the film documentary "Microbirth" won the top prize, the Grand Prizx Award from the Life Sciences Film Festival in Prague last week. Fantastic stuff!
We will be continuing to show this film documentary within the Wellington region to interested groups and individuals. Please contact us if you would like to help us arrange a screening.

Started working on ways to promote this project - October 2013
Thank you to these gorgeous Wellington women and their whanau who joined us recently for a photography session with the wonderfully generous Jo Frances Photography.
The photos from that day will be used for a promotional leaflet that we will be putting together.
If anyone out there supporting this project has contacts within Wellington who are graphic designers, PR specialists, printers who may be able to gift some of their time and resources to this project, please do let us know.

The Birth Hub meeting at the Southern Cross on Tuesday 24th September 2013 was a gathering of about a dozen passionate and committed women with many years of experience in birth and research.
We had a taste of the passion and dedication of the international movement ONE WORLD BIRTH in a snippet from the "Freedom for Birth" film.
We then discussed the history of Wellington being without a Birth Centre and compared the successful results of other New Zealand towns and cities, some with multiple options for place of birth.
With the upcoming CCDHB and local body elections there has been some exciting developments with a number of the candidates showing support for a Birth Centre in Wellington.
We have put this question to the candidates:
The Waikato DHB has 6 primary birthing units and funds 5 privately owned and operated birthing units. Given their 80% uncomplicated, inexpensive birth rate when will Wellington follow their excellent example and open at least 1 midwifery led BIRTH CENTRE?
See their responses here.
Birth hub also outlined the vision of having a virtual and then physical centre for parenting information, resources and products, including a much needed Breastfeeding Cafe for Wellington. In building a midwifery-led, community-driven Birth Centre (maybe in Kaiwharawhara for a central location for Hutt and Wellington City) we aim to have a Relaxed environment that provides Natural pain relief options and is Equal Access for all birthing women and their Whanau (we intend to avoid a user pays system where money gives you access to greater comfort).
We need more hands on deck and all contributions welcome. From pledges, and research through to daily conversations about birth we NEED you. And Wellington needs a Birth Centre.

On Thursday 20th September 2012 we showed this documentary, which reframes childbirth as the most pressing global Human Rights issue today, at Penthouse Cinema, Brooklyn as part of a launch with hundreds of premières all over the world on the same day.
We came away with action points of how we could progress our ideas to promote physiological birthing within the Wellington region and build a Birth Centre.
We also raised a fabulous $2364 for the Birth Centre for Wellington Project.

Vida (Rye) first met Debra Pascali-Bonaro in 2001 when Vida still lived in London, England. Debra came to Vida's flat to talk to the group "Birth Companions" about her doula work.
When Vida found out in 2004 that Debra was creating a film called "An Ordinary Miracle - Global Models of Care" and she was hoping to visit New Zealand to film births here, Vida offered for Debra to stay with her whilst the bi-annual NZ College of Midwives' Conference was on in Wellington in September 2004 (when Vida was 7 months pregnant with her first baby). Unfortunately the timing wasn't right for Debra to film the birth of Vida's baby, Zoe, but we were grateful to the gorgeous Renee from Titahi Bay and her wonderful midwife, Liz Brunton, for offering to have their antenatal appointments, labour and birth filmed. Renee's birth of Jack was featured in the final film documentary and we held a premiere screening in Wellington in September 2008, when the film was released with the different title of "Orgasmic Birth"!
We also raised $1235 to kickstart our Birth Hub network of supporters of a Birth Centre for Wellington.

Vida is passionate about women and their partners/birthing partners having joyful and calm birthing experiences. She facilitates Calmbirth Weekend Courses.
Vida believes that everyone involved in the birth process has an influence on how that birth journey unfolds and in October 2013 arranged for her Calmbirth Trainer to come over from Australia to share his "Creating a Calmer Work/Birth Environment" workshop with midwives and midwifery students in NZ (Auckland, Wellington and Wairarapa.

Ronja has set up Positive Birth Wellington with her friend Liz which meets on the third Sunday of every month at 3.30pm. ($1 koha to cover tea and coffee). Facebook page here.
Positive Birth Wellington is a monthly meeting for mums, expecting mums, birth partners and anyone interested in normalising positive birth.
There is a lot of negativity and fear surrounding birth and it is sometimes difficult to come across a positive birth experience. It offers a space for women who, in an informal way, can come together and share their concerns, their hopes, their birth stories, and find support and information from other mothers and mothers-to-be.
Positive Birth Wellington is linked to the larger cause The Positive Birth Movement which is a grass roots movement to offer positivity about childbirth via a global network of free Positive Birth groups, linked up by social media. It aims to encourage people to Meet Up, Link Up and Shake Up Birth! www.positivebirthmovement.org

During 2011 and 2012 Karen and Vida facilitated "Place of Birth" workshops to encourage women and their partners to really consider how where they gave birth has an affect on the journey and outcome.
They are hoping to continue with these workshops again in 2014 when time allows.

Karen is investigating avenues to encourage 20-somethings to be aware of their rights and choices in birth before they become pregnant. For example, Karen has been in communication with Victoria University to discuss how best to approach this.
